The thing we ran out of first was bread. I had been buying whole wheat bread from Great Harvest Bakery because they grind their wheat fresh every day and it shows in the bread. The flavor is bright and homey, light with a perfect crumb and just enough sweetness to go with anything. Imagine the most amazing smelling bread fresh from the oven and that is what it tastes like. We were addicted to it but it costs $5.25 per loaf. Did you hear that? That was the sound of my grandmother rolling over in her grave.
We’ve experimented with bread recipes from these two great books which I recommend to anyone who plans to make their own whole wheat bread: Laurel’s Kitchen Bread Book (http://www.amazon.com/Laurels-Kitchen-Bread-Book-Whole-Grain/dp/0812969677) and Peter Reinhart’s Whole Grain Bread (http://www.amazon.com/Peter-Reinharts-Whole-Grain-Breads/dp/1580087590/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1233637669&sr=1-1). We’ve settled on the whole grain sandwich bread in the Peter Reinhart’s book. It tastes the most like the Great Harvest bread we loved. I’m also very partial to several of the Laurel Kitchen breads (buttermilk, featherpuff and the desem) but family consensus settled on Peter’s sandwich loaf and we do live in a democratic household where bread is king.

Have you experimented with the no-knead bread recipes found in “Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day” and “Healthy Bread in 5 Minutes a Day” by Hertzberg and Francois? Really cool books. The first one doesn’t have whole wheat recipes, but the second one is chocked full of them. I’d get the free recipe they did in Mother Earth News before buying the book to see if you like it:).

Hi Hank,
I have but I actually like the Peter Reinhart bread better. I wasn’t happy with the texture of the bread. My neighbor lent me both those books. You should try my bread recipe (click on “bread” category) You start it the night before then knead for 10 min that day before baking so I find it pretty easy to fit in. Thanks for the suggestion! I’m always on the Fresh Loaf blog wanting to try new breads but my family loves this sandwich bread so that’s what I have to keep making. Someday I’ll bake for me. ;p
