Chickens – They Make a Lousy House Pet

May 12th, 2009 · 1 Comment

I’m still excited about the chickens.  My husband, not so much.  Over the last few months he’s gotten used to vegetable starts slowly taking over the kitchen and dining room but when the chickens showed up on the dining room table to protect them from both toddler and dog it was a bit much.

A week later they are starting their pecking order challenges, rushing each other with wings flapping followed by chicken ruckus.  They are testing their wings and flying up to the box sides.  Once I covered the box with an old rug liner (the plastic netting variety) they settled on landing on top of the food and water stations instead.

Each ruckus excited the dog who would circle and slobber and whine for hours on end.

I finally relegated them downstairs to the utility room.  No more will I sleep fitfully after dawn, wondering if those needy peeps and chirps are my chickens or wild birds outside my window.  I’m done with the weary sleep of the new mother – way too old for that now.

We now have the dining room table back, the dog is able once again to nap during the day and you aren’t hit with that pet store aroma of fresh pine shavings when you open the front door.

Chickens are fun, and cute and mysterious.  But I’ll surely be happy when they move outside.

Your kitchen sounds just like mine! It’s a wild kingdom with all the plants and creatures. We’re at that kitchen-smells-kind-of-like-a-barn stage with the chicks. It will seem like such a big room once they and the plants move outside.

    Congrats on the new site!
