I gave up on the hair products when the shampoo was a bust - totally stripped my hippy curls. The lotion is great and that face oil I swear by after using it for a year and a half. Good luck!

What a great recipe. I have been inspired to try and make my own cremes and lotions. I am so tired of paying too much $$ for them. I've got sensitive skin so I can't just buy vaseline lotion and except it to work. I'm allergic to lanolin. It is in so many products. But some oils also cause me problems. I'll have to narrow down which oils works the best for my skin. I love Kheils Creme du Corp but it is still full of chemicals.

Have you made a hair conditioner yet?

Jen I wonder if it's more pumpable because of the glycerin? I may add that next time. I've been so busy right now I'm just using straight coconut oil on my skin - it works just fine! But it is a little greasy upon first application then soaks in over 10 minutes. I love the way it smells and tastes when I use it on my lips too. I'd love to hear any changes you make next go around. I really need to start infusing some lemon verbena oil before it's all gone! And then I know mosquitos don't like lemon balm or rosemary so those might be nice ones to make a bug off lotion from too. So fun incorporating some of the garden into my skin!

Thanks Annette! Since you mentioned that you wanted to play with the liquid volume to get a pumpable consistency, I thought I'd let you know how mine turned out. I followed your directions exactly, and weighed all the ingredients on a digital scale (including the water components). I mixed the oils/butters and water at about 110 degrees, since the oils/butters were beginning to set up.

I used:
1 oz. comfrey infused olive oil
1 oz. almond oil
4 oz. lavender infused jojoba oil

1 oz. cocoa butter
1 oz. shea butter
1 oz. coconut oil
1 oz. beeswax

2 oz. witch hazel
2 oz. glycerine
5 oz. distilled water

I did use the grapefruit seed extract, and added lavender and spearmint essential oils.

My consistency is very smooth and pumpable! In fact, I wish it was just a bit thicker, so I will play with ratios a bit next time. I'm not sure if mine is so much different because of the specific ingredients I used, or because I weighed everything. It smells wonderful, and I'm happy with it. It feels a bit greasy on the skin, but I can live with that, since the ingredients are awesome and chemical free. :) I can't wait to play around with this some more. Thanks for a great recipe.

Hi Jen,

It doesn't matter so long as the ratio is right. If the temps get off one way or the other it may get grainy but you can still use it - just pay more care the next time. Have fun!

Hi Annette. I infused some Jojoba oil with lavender the other day, and I can't wait to make this lotion today! I have a quick question first: Are the measurements for the ingredients by weight, volume, or a combo of both? It might not matter much, but I want to get it right. Thanks so much!

Rebecca, it's so fun to watch it come together into lotion using just a few ingredients! I hope you have fun with it.
