Open Garden Tomorrow and Fundraising

Just a quick reminder that tomorrow, Saturday April 17 from 1-4 is my open garden! I hope to see everyone there but if not I’ll schedule another so just email me with suggested dates. In early May there will be a Tuesday home school tour and later in May I’ll be on the Sustainable NE Seattle garden tour docket as well. And by then things should be much bigger anyway.

This April tour is a little early but I wanted to have one before it was too late for you to plant your own.

If you don’t already have it the address is 5710 NE 56th St 98105 but do mapquest it since it’s a little confusing getting here. My house will be immediately obvious.

Please consider donating to www.springintobed.org while you are here. I will be collecting checks which you can make out directly to Seattle Tilth and on the memo line write “Spring into Bed”. Spring into bed is an offshoot of Seattle Tilth attempting to raise enough funds and volunteers to create 100 new vegetable gardens around Seattle on May 8 for low income families. These are children and their familes with limited to no access to fresh, organic produce so it’s a worthwhile cause.

I will also have information available on the Seattle Urban Farm Coop that I belong to – a community of local gardeners and urban farmers who help each other both online and in person as we figure out how to raise chickens and goats and gardens.

Hope to see you tomorrow!

  2. It’s a nutty weekend for me but I’m going to pull out the stops to try to stop by.

  3. Annette,
You completely rock! I am planning to drag my soccer crazed crew after the Sounders game and will also bring a check… great, great idea to have a fundraising effort for this wonderful project.

  4. I hope it went well!

  5. So nice meeting you and getting such great inspiration! I’ve passed it along to my beekeeping friends (Becky and Ken) and they might be in touch. They can get you all set up if you’re really interested.

  6. Sorry I was unable to attend today – I hope it went well!

  7. Thanks for opening your garden to us! You had quite a turnout! Sorry I didn’t get to introduce myself– I didn’t want to interrupt!
Your garden is proof that edible can also be gorgeous! Well done!

  8. Thanks so much for opening your garden to us today. I really enjoyed poking around and seeing what you have done. I’m impressed at how much you are growing in a regular sized yard and you still have room for the kids to play. What a beautiful place!

  9. Thanks everyone for coming out – I’m sorry that I missed talking to quite a few people before they had to leave but hopefully anyone I missed will come back later in the season to see things filling in a little more. I’m hoping for some weather breaks tomorrow and maybe I can even get a virtual tour of the garden up for everyone who couldn’t come. We’ll see since I’m technically challenged…

And Tiffany I am VERY interested. I mean my neighbor is very interested…just in case my husband is reading this.. ;p

  10. I’m hoping you wil post photos.

  11. Hi LeAnn, working on a virtual tour for you. It’s so sunny today I’m not sure how well it will come out and it’s really long so I might break it up into chapters but you’ll be able to get an idea.

  12. Hi, I’m sorry I missed your open garden, I had to take advantage of the nice weather to get some gardening done. I know your garden is wonderful, I’m sure people loved to see it and get ideas! I for one am using your potato in the coffee bag idea! I just wanted to say thanks for supporting Spring into Bed. I’m on the board at Tilth, who is a sponsor for the project which is being led by Cascadian Edible Landscapes. It really is a great way to provide low income folks with fresh produce, very awesome of you for helping to spread the word and raise funds, and many thanks to all your readers who donated!

  13. Hi Justine, thanks! I think I raised a few hundred dollars (haven’t separated the coffee bag $ from the spring into bed money yet) so a nice chunk for them. Not too bad though considering it was sort of last minute!

I love the idea of Tilth and everything they do, I just wish it wasn’t so spendy to take their classes. It’s an organization I’d love to be involved with as I get more time.

  14. Hi again, just an FYI, you get a discount on classes if you’re a member, bringing the cost of most 3 hour 1 session classes to $25. They also teach some free classes every year, and have $12 1 hour classes at events. Also, they don’t make any profit from class fees, I don’t know if that changes your value/dollar assessment, but I thought it might be worth mentioning. Thanks again, I look forward to hearing more about your garden this year as the season progresses!

  15. Hi Justine, how much is a membership? Every time I see a class I want it seems like it’s about $50 so that is good to know. I’d love to participate! They always have so many cool things going on.

  16. Hi Annette, membership for Tilth is $60 for family, $35 individual, and $20 limited income. Details are on the web site, and you can sign up online. ‘Members also get voting rights for board members and officers, and the newsletter which is jam packed with info about what tilth is up to in the community, which is a lot these days, and much more to come. Looking forward to checking out your virtual tour!
